Market (wholesale & retail)
The wholesale component of the market is made up of a number of parties carrying out various functions including bidding (purchasers), offering (generators), scheduling and dispatch (System Operator), pricing (Pricing Manager) and clearing and settlement (Clearing Manager).
The retail component of the market is made up of a number of complex processes that deal with accuracy of metering, meter reading, switching of consumers (Registry Manager) and allocation of volumes of electricity to trades (Reconciliation Manager).
The Authority oversees and regulates the wholesale and retail market by ensuring that:
- electricity is generated and distributed in a reliable way;
- the market for buying and selling electricity is administered efficiently; and
- disputes that arise in the course of operating the system and the markets are managed effectively.
The Wholesale area of the Authority manages contracts with market operation service providers that operate the wholesale component of the market (Pricing Manager, Wholesale Information and Trading System Provider, and Clearing Manager).
The Retail area of the Authority manages contracts with service providers that operate the retail component of the market (Registry Manager and Reconciliation Manager).
The Authority's Director Wholesale is Tim Street. The Authority's Manager Retail and Network Markets is Craig Evans.
Work undertaken in this area between 15 September 2003 and 31 October 2010 was the responsibility of the Electricity Commission.
