Extended load control project

The project has identified that there is a potential of more than 100 MW of under-utilised hot water load that at times could be offered into the fast instantaneous reserves market. This could be accessed by tripping the hot-water load using the frequency sensitive element of the hot-water control relay.

However, interruptible load compliance requirements have proved a barrier and the the System Operator has been engaged to investigate and implement an adapted post-event compliance methodology that uses the actual rate of frequency fall during an event to determine a provider's performance, as opposed to an absolute load drop requirement.

The Authority will also build awareness of the benefits to be achieved from offering this form of reserve through discussions with the parties involved.
