We are calling for nominations for three members of the SRC

In addition to the skills and experience generally sought for SRC members, we are particularly interested in nominations from people who have experience in governance or management roles responsible for:

  • electricity generation, particularly hydro, wind or thermal
  • industrial businesses, especially businesses connected directly to Transpower’s grid.

The SRC provides independent advice to us on reliability of supply issues, the performance of the electricity system, and the system operator. The SRC is comprised of senior members of the New Zealand electricity industry, including consumers.

We are required to ensure that the members of the SRC have between them appropriate knowledge and experience of the electricity industry to provide advice to us.

The expected term of appointment is three years. We intend to appoint the successful nominees in March 2019.

Nominations and accompanying documents can be submitted through the nomination form by 5.00pm on Tuesday, 29 January 2019.

Hon Heather Roy is the Independent Chair of Utilities Disputes Limited and the Advertising Standards Authority, and is a principal and director of her business consultancy, TorquePoint. Heather’s previous governance roles include the independent chair of Medicines New Zealand, various Ministerial roles, including Minister of Consumer Affairs, and a member of the Territorial Force Employer Support Council.

Heather has also worked in the health sector as both a practitioner and in policy development, and was a Captain in the NZ Army Reserve (Royal NZ Engineers). She is a member of the Institute of Directors and winner of the Women on Boards ‘Inspirational Excellence Award’ 2017

Greg Skelton

Greg Skelton has been the Chief Executive of Wellington Electricity since April 2009. Prior to that, Greg was the Chief Executive of Alpine Energy Limited and has held various senior management roles in the electricity industry. Greg has 30 years of experience in the fields of production engineering, electrical engineering and business management. Greg holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Business Administration, and is a fellow of Engineering New Zealand.

Bruce Turner is Director Commodity and Risk Trading at Fonterra. Bruce's previous roles include Senior Vice President at Suez Energy International, Vice President Trading at Tractebel EGI, General Manager Wholesale Group Mighty River Power, and General Manager Commercial at Vector Ltd. Bruce's background includes operational and strategic leadership roles in energy and commodity trading and risk management, electricity generation, distribution and retailing, strategy and regulatory affairs, along with an active involvement in New Zealand electricity sector reforms during the 1990s.

Guy Waipara (Rongowhakaata) is the General Manager of Generation and Natural Resources at Meridian Energy Limited. Guy’s previous roles at Meridian have also covered General Management positions in Wholesale Markets and External Relations. Guy’s background includes strategic and operational roles in mergers and acquisitions in Meridian and transmission planning, system operations and grid development at Transpower.

Vince Hawksworth is the Chief Executive of TrustPower Limited. Vince’s previous roles include Chief Executive of Hydro Tasmania and General Manager Retail and General Manager Generation at Genesis Energy. Vince’s background includes strategic and operational leadership roles in electricity generation, trading and retail. He is a fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and a former Vice President of the Electricity Engineers Association of New Zealand.

Marc England

Marc England is the Chief Executive of Genesis. Marc has strong international experience, with previous roles on the executive of Sydney-based AGL Energy and before that with British Gas. Marc’s experience in the energy sector has focused on finance, marketing, strategy and innovation. Marc is responsible for the leadership, strategic direction and management of the company, whilst leading Genesis’s transformation from gen-tailer to energy management provider. Marc has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Sussex and holds an MBA from London’s Imperial College.

 

Nathan Strong

Nathan Strong

Nathan Strong is the General Manager Business Asssurance at Unison Networks Limited. He has responsibilities for Unison’s Risk Management, Legal, Regulatory, Network Pricing and Health and Safety Management activities. He also is a Member of a number of the Electricity Networks Association’s Working Groups, including Regulatory and Distribution Pricing. Nathan’s background is in economics and has held roles at the Commerce Commission and in economics consultancy.

Anne Herrington is a director and co-founder of Smart Power Limited. Smart Power, established in 1993, specialises in providing independent advice on energy use, costs and the energy industry to consumers. Most of Anne’s time is spent working directly with clients to save dollars and energy but she has also done stints on various EA groups as a consumer representative and is currently on the Expert Advisory Panel for the coalition Government’s Review of Electricity Pricing.

Barbara Elliston is a director of Elliston Power Consultants Ltd, Counties Power Limited and Easy Warm Ltd, as well as being on the Board of the Australian Solar Council. Barbara's previous roles include directorships with Genesis Energy and Transpower as well as directorship and management with Comalco New Zealand Ltd. Barbara's background includes corporate governance, strategic development and distributed generation - photovoltaics. She earned a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) with honours from the University of Auckland.
