New generation investment dashboard published

  • Generation

Our new generation investment dashboard provides a more dynamic and detailed picture of planned generation projects in New Zealand.

More transparency around planned generation supports developers to make informed investment decisions. With national demand for electricity rising, it is important that the right projects are delivered to meet demand in an efficient way.

The new dashboard also includes more detail about projects, such as where they are being built. The data reveals that 75% of projects with known locations are in the North Island, with more planned generation capacity located in the Waikato (5GW) than in any other region.

Currently around 90% of national generation capacity is owned by gentailers. However, the dashboard shows that most new generation capacity is being developed by independent parties.

While we expect the ownership of some projects may change, this indicates new entrants see opportunities to enter the generation market and competitive pressure in the generation market may increase in future from a more diverse range of generation owners.

We encourage developers to keep Transpower informed of any changes to projects as they happen. The accuracy and usefulness of our dashboard depends on project details being up to date.

The dashboard displays data collected under our investment pipeline clause 2.16 notice and provides details on 45.2GW of generation projects.

Previously, information on the investment pipeline came from surveys carried out in 2022 and 2023. While this data provided useful insights, it captured only a static view of the pipeline at a set point in time. The new dashboard will be updated monthly to provide the most up-to-date information available.

We will be continue to add new features as the data evolves, so watch this space.
