Smart panel demand flexibility trial
We're providing enhanced regulatory support to Basis' smart panel demand flexibility trial as part of the Power Innovation Pathway.
Basis
Reimagining home energy management
Basis has developed a smart residential energy management system and are running a trial to demonstrate a new model for demand-side visibility and management, that empowers consumer choice and unlocks savings on electricity bills. Through this technology, industry can access insights to enable demand flexibility and deliver a more affordable electricity system.

Innovation
Empowering households with smart panel technology
New Zealand's electricity system faces a need for significant investment in critical infrastructure to support changes in demand and supply. Increased demand-side flexibility could save billions in network investment, but consumers have few practical tools to participate.
Basis has developed a residential smart panel to transform how households understand and manage electricity and a flexibility platform to support demand-side flexibility and help reduce network constraints. It can help households reduce their power bills and help shift demand to reduce network constraints.
Power Innovation Pathway support
The Electricity Authority is supporting this initiative to improve flexibility and market efficiency and enable a more reliable and affordable electricity system for the long-term benefit of consumers.

Providing regulatory support
The Electricity Authority is providing guidance and information on regulatory processes to help Basis navigate regulations and reduce its barriers to deploying demand-flexibility hardware.
We are also providing information on the process for any exemption applications that may be required.

Informing the Authority’s work programme
Our Network Policy and Retail and Consumer teams are supporting the scoping of this smart panel demand flexibility trial to inform the Authority’s work (eg, network visibility, flexibility markets and digitalisation).
The trial supports the development of demand-side flexibility protocols as recommended by the Market Development Advisory Group, as well as the objectives our consumer mobility work programme, which aims to create an electricity system where solutions are consumer-centric and consumers can be active participants.
