Independent advisory and investment firm KordaMentha has been appointed by the Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko to lead an organisational design review, following a competitive tender process.

The Authority Board commissioned the review in response to the Government’s commitment to strengthen the Authority’s enforcement and monitoring powers following the Frontier report on the performance of the electricity market.

The review will advise on how the organisation can best incorporate additional powers, while delivering its statutory objectives and regulatory responsibilities in the smartest and most cost-effective way.

Authority Chair Anna Kominik says: “The Electricity Authority has undertaken a significant change programme over the past three years and has introduced far reaching consumer-focused protections and market enhancements.

“The additional powers being given to the Authority provide the opportunity to rethink how we perform our work to deliver to consumers, moving beyond a traditional reactive regulatory approach to an organisation that is anticipating and shaping the electricity market for the long-term benefit of New Zealand consumers.

“This review is about positioning the regulator to continue to be bold in driving the sector to deliver more affordable, secure electricity for New Zealanders now and in future.”

KordaMentha has a track record of delivering insightful independent reviews across the public and private sector. The KordaMentha review team, based in Australia and New Zealand, will draw on regulatory and energy sector expertise as they commence the Electricity Authority review this week.

The Authority Board expects to receive the review report in the first quarter of 2026.
