South Pacific Energy customers transferred to new retailers

  • Retail

All customers of defaulted retailer South Pacific Energy Limited have been transferred to other retailers.

Ten of South Pacific Energy’s customers had voluntarily switched to other retailers after being notified on 3 October 2025 that South Pacific Energy had entered into a default. On Tuesday 14 October, the Authority assigned the remaining 37 customers to other retailers.

About half of South Pacific Energy customers were residential, and the other half were small businesses. No customers were disconnected during this switch.

Through the Authority’s trader default process, any customers who haven’t switched to another retailer in the allotted time are allocated to one by the Authority. This ensures no customers are left without a retailer.

The allocation of remaining customers to other retailers was based on the retailer’s market share.

The Authority triggered its trader default process on 26 September 2025 after a distributor terminated its agreement with South Pacific Energy over unpaid distribution charges.

The trader default process is designed to ensure all affected customers are transferred to another retailer without any interruptions to their electricity supply and maintains the integrity of the electricity market for the benefit of all consumers.
