Generation investment pipeline
This dashboard shows information about potential new generation projects in New Zealand.
We created this dashboard to improve transparency around the investment pipeline, so that developers can make informed decisions about their projects.
Understanding the dashboard
What do the different ‘project statuses’ mean?
We use three different stages (‘other’, ‘actively pursued’ and ‘committed’) to describe the progress of new generation projects. A project is ‘committed’ once a final investment decision has been made. If a final investment decision hasn’t been made, but other significant milestones have been reached (a location being secured, consent application submitted, or contracts to finance the project executed) then the project is ‘actively pursued’. Projects in an earlier stage of development are in the ‘other’ category.
Will all the projects in the pipeline be built?
Projects at advanced development stages are more likely to be completed, but we do not expect all projects in the pipeline to be built. A new generation plant is a significant investment for developers, and the complexity of these projects means they can take a long time to plan. Some early-stage projects may not proceed as more research is carried out into their viability.
What is an integrated developer?
An integrated developer is a developer who owns existing generation assets and also acts as an electricity retailer. This dashboard includes Contact Energy, Manawa Energy (recently acquired by Contact), Meridian Energy, Mercury NZ, Genesis Energy, Todd Energy and Nova Energy in the integrated category.
