Intelligent community energy hubs
We're providing enhanced regulatory support to SUPA Energy’s intelligent community energy hubs initiative as part of the Power Innovation Pathway.
SUPA Energy
SUPA Energy – affordable local electricity through intelligent community hubs
As part of their retail model, SUPA installs solar and battery systems for businesses, marae and schools at no upfront cost, creating community energy hubs that provide affordable local power and add new generation capacity.
Building supply, not just managing it
New Zealand's renewable energy transition requires substantial new flexible generation and storage capacity. Traditional infrastructure processes can create barriers to distributed solar deployment, inconsistent requirements across network companies, limited visibility on network capacity during planning stages, slow access to information and approvals, as well as varying connection fees make it difficult to scale distributed generation efficiently.
SUPA uses proprietary machine learning technology to optimise energy flows between generation, storage and community members. The platform provides transparent data to all participants while optimising assets across its portfolio nationally. Rather than reselling existing power, SUPA physically adds generation capacity and shares its benefits across hosts, communities and the broader grid. By dispatching storage at times of peak demand, this helps relieve local congestion and defer the need for costly network upgrades.
About SUPA
SUPA's mission is to be part of the solution to New Zealand's emerging energy supply problem. The company recognises that accessible financing and streamlined infrastructure processes are essential for distributed generation to reach its potential. By managing network complexity and market volatility, SUPA makes it easier for communities to generate and profit from local clean power and build energy resilience.
