Authority enhances collection and access to thermal fuels information

The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko (Authority) is introducing new requirements for the provision of thermal fuels information.

These requirements are set out in the clause 2.16 notice published today following consideration of feedback on our consultation paper.

The notice comes into force on 1 April and the first provision of data is due on 9 April.

Thermal generators will be required to provide information on their fuel availability weekly, through the Authority’s information provision platform.

A subset of this information will be published on the EMI website and we expect publication of information to begin in early May.

As we head into winter, knowing how much thermal fuel is available to support the electricity system is critical for understanding security of supply. At present, we can’t access timely and consistent information about thermal fuel availability, which inhibits our ability to monitor security of supply risk and act to support the sector in mitigating those risks.

Publishing more information will help participants to make informed decisions about risk-management as we head into winter 2025 and beyond.

The change announced today complements the recent urgent amendment to the Electricity Industry Participation Code enabling the system operator to access thermal fuel information for monitoring and decision making (such as through the Electricity Risk Curves).
