The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko (Authority) has released our Annual Report 2024/25, highlighting a year of decisive action to strengthen New Zealand’s electricity system and deliver better outcomes for consumers.
The report reflects a period of significant challenge and transformation. Following the pressures of winter 2024, the Authority accelerated regulatory reform to ensure all New Zealanders can access reliable, affordable power now and in the future.
In 2024/25, we:
- rapidly established the Energy Competition Task Force, jointly with the Commerce Commission, which:
- protected buyers against high peak time prices through the introduction of a new ‘super-peak’ standardised hedge contract
- consulted on proposals to level the playing field between the four large gentailers and independent generators and retailers
- required all large retailers to offer cheaper power at off-peak times through time-of-use pricing plans
- implemented the Consumer Care Obligations to ensure electricity retailers treat customers fairly, help those struggling to pay and make sure people who rely on electricity for medical reasons aren’t disconnected
- improved future security and resilience with common quality requirements so connecting devices can make use of new technologies to support a safe and reliable electricity supply
- gave consumers more choice, more control and better value for their power through improving price transparency and consumer tools, public education campaigns, and improving access to consumer data
- helped innovators bring new ideas to market faster through our Power Innovation Pathway.
We would like to thank you for your engagement in our work over the last year. We value the insights this brings to what we do.
We are proud of the progress made in 2024/25, but we know that significant challenges remain. We have harnessed momentum and are continuing to deliver an ambitious programme of work into 2025/26 to ensure the electricity system remains reliable, affordable and fit for the future.
