Reminder for distributors to add distributed generation information to the Electricity Registry

  • Distribution
  • Compliance

As of 1 August 2025, distributors are required under Part 11 of the Electricity Industry Participation Code 2010 to add detailed data about distributed generation to the Electricity Registry. This change follows our decision to expand the registry to include more detail on the distributed generation installed at an ICP.

To support distributors, we’ve produced a guide for entering distributed generation information into the registry.

This change will help distributors to manage their networks, support the use of distributed generation for flexibility and provide more value for distributed generation owners. This helps to reduce demand peaks and ultimately promote the affordability and reliability of New Zealand’s electricity supply.

Distributors do not need to update the registry with information on distributed generation that existed prior to 1 August 2025, unless the distributor inspects the ICP or an application is made to connect new distributed generation. However, we do encourage updating historical information where possible to improve the accuracy of the data in the registry.

If you have any questions about complying with this requirement, please email us at compliance@ea.govt.nz.

For technical queries, please contact the Registry Manager using the details shown in the registry.
