Code exemption granted to Meridian – Retail Market Monitoring Notice

The Electricity Authority (Authority) has granted Meridian Energy Limited (Meridian) (FLCK code only) an exemption from certain data reporting requirements under the Retail Market Monitoring Notice.

The Retail Market Monitoring Notice requires retailers to report specific residential and small business customer data to the Authority for increased transparency and accountability in New Zealand’s retail electricity market.

Meridian applied for an exemption to Flick customer data only and for a small subset of the Retail Market Monitoring Notice requirements.

The context of this exemption is Meridian’s purchase of Flick Electric Limited assets, including Flick customers and its plan to transition customers during August and September 2025.

In the unique circumstances of this case, the Authority decided that full compliance is not necessary to meet its statutory objectives (the relevant test under section 11 of the Electricity Industry Act 2010) and emphasised that exemptions are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
