Consultation open on distribution system operation models

The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko is consulting on three alternative models for distribution system operation (DSO) as part of the Future System Operation (FSO) project.

Achieving network visibility and coordinating distributed energy resources (DER), such as rooftop solar systems, electric vehicles and batteries, are important new DSO functions.

DER must coordinate effectively to shift electricity consumption when needed and ensure consumers can benefit from lower power bills and the opportunity to sell electricity into the networks.

Our initial consultation in 2024 identified the need for better system operation coordination at the distribution level, where DERs are connected to the distribution networks.

Now we are seeking feedback on three proposed DSO models. These models differ in how these functions are shared between Transpower as the transmission system operator and one or more distributors. In our consultation paper we ask which DSO model submitters prefer, and why.

Submit your feedback before 5pm, Tuesday 19 August 2025.
