Preparing for the next commercial market making contract

The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko is preparing for the next commercial market making contract, which will start on 1 March 2027.
Market making supports New Zealand’s electricity futures market by providing continuous buy and sell prices. This helps market participants manage price risk and supports reliable price signals.
Alongside the regulated market making provided by the large gentailers, a commercial market maker funded through the Electricity Industry Levy offers an independent view of future electricity prices.
Following last year’s review of our market making settings, we intend for the next contract to reflect these changes and to cover up to a five-year service period. We will soon begin a procurement process for this service. The tender documents will be published on the Government Electronic Tender Service in the next few weeks.
