60 organisations practice system-wide emergency response

Last week 60 organisations joined forces to take part in the Industry Exercise 2025 and tested our collective response and readiness to a simulated system-wide emergency scenario.

The Electricity Authority and Transpower ran the exercise, which is a critical opportunity for industry to practice how they would coordinate an effective emergency response internally, and with others in the sector. It also tests operations and communications to minimise impact on consumers.

The exercise is geared around specific scenarios the sector could face in real life. This year’s desktop exercise simulated a coordinated response to an extended electricity supply shortage that resulted in national power cuts.

This put industry collaboration and preparedness into action, as participants implemented rolling outage plans, and tested operations and communications with stakeholders, the media and consumers.

We thank all involved and look forward to sharing the lessons learned. Participants played a vital role in building industry-wide capability and advancing our readiness on behalf of New Zealanders.
