Authority proposes protocol updates to strengthen electricity information exchange

The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko (Authority) is proposing new and updated protocols to strengthen information and choice for electricity consumers.
We are proposing a new electricity information exchange protocol for consumer product information (EIEP14B), which sets a standard format for how retailers provide information about electricity plans.
“This will help cut through the complexity and enable consumers to better compare plans,” says General Manager Retail and Consumer Andrew Millar.
We are also proposing to modernise how consumption data is shared by updating the detailed consumption information protocol (EIEP13A) and summary consumption information protocol (EIEP13B).
These new and updated protocols build on the previously prescribed retailer product information protocol (EIEP14A). Together, this suite of rules will give consumers better access to meaningful information about their plan and consumption history through more tailored comparison and switching services, like the Authority’s own Billy website.
Millar says, “These are important changes. Aligning and improving consumption and product information standards enables better information and choice for consumers, and supports the future implementation of Open Electricity.”
The proposals are open to consultation until 24 June. Decisions are expected in July, effective from 30 October 2026.
