Updating the Code to strengthen the System Operator’s information gathering powers

  • Policy
  • Code

In order to manage electricity supply risks, the Electricity Industry Participation Code will be updated in December to strengthen the System Operator’s ability to gather information.

On 14 March 2025 we introduced an urgent Code amendment to give the System Operator better access to information about thermal fuel availability. This information is critical for forecasting the electricity system’s ability to meet demand and manage risks associated with energy shortages.

Since then, the System Operator has collected data from generators to produce monthly electricity risk curves and storage trajectory analyses. These tools help the industry prepare for potential shortages and keep the lights on for consumers.

Following consultation with stakeholders, these changes will be made permanent. The System Operator will have continued access to the information it needs to support a secure and reliable electricity supply.

The Code amendment will come into effect on 1 December 2025 before the urgent Code amendment expires.

We appreciate the feedback received during the consultation and thank everyone who contributed.
