We had a great turnout at our latest online quarterly update on Tuesday 21 April. Thanks to all those who tuned in.

Our Chief Executive, Sarah Gillies, opened the session with an update on the work and thinking the Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko (Authority) has been doing around its strategic direction.

Our strategic vision is: Reliable electricity at lowest cost for New Zealand consumers. But Sarah explained how our electricity system’s growing complexity is presenting new challenges to achieving that vision – especially in terms of increased reliance on renewable generation sources.

There is good news in terms of supply with lots of confirmed new generation in the pipeline, but many developments across retail, the wholesale markets and transmission/distribution are adding to the complexity.

Sarah went on to describe some elements of the new work programme that will flow from our strategic vision. She foreshadowed some of our impending decisions that will have an impact on both reliability and affordability; and finished with an update on Billy, the Authority’s new online switching and comparison service.

Three presentations by Authority staff then followed:

  • Consumer Care Obligations: new guidance for supporting medically dependent consumers – Catherine Marks, Manager Legal, Compliance and Corporate
  • Improving electricity billing in Aotearoa New Zealand – Carolina Rodriguez, Principal Analyst, Retail and Consumer, Policy
  • Enabling flexibility across New Zealand's electricity system – Siobhan Bradley, Flexibility Lead, Networks and System Change
