New quarterly over-the-counter market bids and offers summaries
- Wholesale
The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko gathers information to gain deeper insights into the electricity markets to help ensure current market rules are working for all consumers (amongst other things). We also report on the information we gather to enhance and improve market participation.
We have begun publishing quarterly 'OTC market bids and offers summaries' (summaries) that will increase transparency by providing the market with more information about over-the-counter (OTC) risk management contracts.
Helping participants manage risk will lead to more efficient pricing, and promote reliability, competition, and efficiency in the electricity industry for the long-term benefit of consumers. This is in line with the Authority’s main statutory objective.
The summaries provide an overview of bids and offers activity in the OTC hedge market using aggregated or non-identifiable information – such as key statistics on hedge requests and responses to those requests, including response rates, volumes requested and offered, and pricing offered.
Clause 2.16 of the Electricity Industry Participation Code 2010 requires electricity market participants who buy or sell OTC contracts to regularly provide us with information about OTC requests for buying and selling contracts and responses to those requests. We use this information to produce these summaries.
The first summary, published 6 July 2026, includes OTC market information from July 2025 to March 2026. Subsequent reports will cover information from the previous quarter.
The summaries complement the monthly hedge market summary reports we began publishing in late 2025, but focus entirely on the OTC hedge market rather than the Australian Stock Exchange. They also differ in that they are quarterly.
Editions of both reports are available on the Hedge market summaries page of the Authority’s website.
