Enabling investment and innovation
Improving visibility of generation investment
Improving information on investments in new generation connecting to the transmission and distribution network.
Overview
Improving the visibility of generation investment will help with monitoring long-term security of supply. It will also support the monitoring of competitive outcomes and constraints to investment, as well as support investment confidence and provide information for investment decisions.
We have published a new generation dashboard which provides a more dynamic and detailed picture of planned generation projects than ever before.
It includes details about where projects are located, their size, status and expected commissioning.
The dashboard uses data provided to grid owner Transpower, under our Investment pipeline clause 2.16 notice, and will be updated monthly to ensure the most up to date information is available.

Project background
There has been limited information available about generation and load projects in the pipeline. The aim of this project is to collect and publish data on the pipeline of investments in new generation and load connecting to the transmission network.
The Electricity Authority has a programme of work underway to support increased investment in generation. Part of that work involves providing better information about the supply and demand outlook to support investment.
Other work is already in progress to review Part 6 of the Code, which covers generation and load projects on distribution networks, along with recent improvements to information about small-scale distributed generation.
This work aligns with recommendation 17 in tranche 2 of the Market Development Advisory Group’s report Price discovery in a renewables-based electricity system. It also builds on the 2022 and 2023 Generation Investment Survey and Transpower’s existing connection enquiry dashboard.
